Within a matter of two days, Section VII's undefeateds on the diamond have been defeated.
A 4-3 Ticonderoga High School softball win against undefeated Saranac High School on Wednesday, May 1, was followed by a 5-4 Peru High School baseball win against undefeated Plattsburgh High School the next day: Thursday, May 2.
"To really come out on top and get these younger guys playing ball at such a high level is a great feeling to get this win against Plattsburgh, because they are a great team," said Peru pitcher Jake Frechette.
Frechette was key to the Nighthawks victory, pitching a complete game. Both he and Plattsburgh pitcher Warren Miller dueled on the mound, not allowing a single run to keep the game tied at 3-3 through the fifth, sixth and seventh innings of play.
"He's an incredible athlete," Frechette said about Miller. "An incredible baseball player. I've been playing against him for quite some time now, and he always scares me, but this time I got him."
Peru's bats were also timely. Zack Engstrom got their scoring in the Top of the first with a 2-RBI single. Deacon Whitmarsh also added an RBI double in the top of the fourth, but it was Gabe Moore's hard swing to the left which caused Plattsburgh left fielder Dan Hartmann to mishandle the ball leading to two Nighthawks to score at the plate.
The Hornets featured RBI at-bats from Miller, Nate Baker, and Braedan Calkins. Miller also got a triple in the bottom of the 8th, where he was able to score on a run after a balk from Frechette.
The two teams will get to do it again on the diamond on Saturday, May 4, this time at Peru High School. First pitch is at 11 a.m.
